Is “Free Solar” Real? 3 Red Flags NJ Homeowners Must Avoid
Updated Feb 15, 2026 | Sunshine Solar Energy
If you live in New Jersey, you have seen the ads. They pop up on your Facebook feed or interrupt your YouTube videos: “New Jersey residents are getting paid to go solar!” or “Click here to claim your Government Stimulus Check!”
As the 2026 solar market heats up with rising utility rates, scammers and aggressive lead-generation companies have flooded the state with misleading claims.
At Sunshine Solar, we believe you deserve the truth. Solar is a powerful financial tool, but it is not magic. Here are the **3 Major Red Flags** to watch out for before you click that link.
Red Flag #1: The “Government Check” Lie
The Claim: “The government will send you a check for $10,000 just for installing panels.”
The Reality: The federal incentive is a tax credit (Section 25D), not a rebate check. It is non-refundable. This means if you owe $0 in federal taxes at the end of the year, the IRS will not send you a refund for the credit amount.
(Note: The only “Check” you receive is from SREC-II performance payments or battery VPP programs, which are earned income, not a stimulus handout.)
Red Flag #2: The “Utility Mandate”
The Claim: A person knocks on your door wearing a neon vest and says, “I’m with the utility (PSE&G/JCP&L) checking to see if your home qualifies for the new state mandate.”
The Reality: This is false. Utility companies are not sending door-to-door reps to install solar. In fact, utility companies generally lose revenue when you go solar. These are third-party salespeople trying to look official. Always ask for ID.
If a salesperson promises you will never receive another bill from your utility, run. Even if your solar system covers 100% of your energy usage, you will still pay a monthly “Customer Charge” (usually $5.00 to $10.00) to remain connected to the grid for net metering.
Red Flag #3: “Free Solar” vs. “No Cost Down”
The Claim: “Get Free Solar Panels installed tomorrow!”
The Reality: Solar panels are never free. Someone always pays for them.
- The Honest Pitch (PPA): In a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), you pay $0 down. The installer pays for the panels, and you simply agree to buy the power they produce at a rate lower than the utility. This is “No Cost Upfront,” which is legitimate.
- The Scam Pitch: Implying you will never pay for the equipment or the power. That is simply not true.
