2026 Install Guide

When is the Best Time to Install Solar in NJ? (Why You Can’t Wait Until Summer)

Updated Feb 15, 2026 | Sunshine Solar Energy

It is mid-February. The snow is melting, the days are getting longer, and many homeowners are asking the same question: “When is the best time to install solar in New Jersey?”

Common sense says “Summer,” because that is when the sun is out. But common sense is wrong.

If you wait until the weather is warm to sign a contract, you are arguably too late. In the New Jersey solar market, the “Best Time” is actually February or March. Here is why March 15th is the unofficial deadline if you want a $0 electric bill next winter.

The Secret: Solar is a “Savings Account”

Most homeowners assume solar works like a generator: “Sun is out, I have power.” But that is only half the story. The real financial return happens via net metering“>net metering.

  • Spring/Summer (The Harvest): In May and June, your system will produce 2x or 3x the energy you actually use. You don’t lose that extra power; you “bank” it with PSE&G, JCP&L, or ACE as a 1-to-1 credit.
  • Winter (The Withdrawal): In January, when the sun is weak and the days are short, your panels won’t cover your usage. You stop paying the utility and start “spending” the credits you banked in May.
The Trap:
If you install your system in August, you missed the harvest. You enter winter with an empty bank account. You will have to pay the utility company all winter long until the sun comes back the following spring.

The 90-Day Reality Check

Solar is a construction project, not an Amazon Prime delivery. Here is what the timeline looks like if you sign a contract today vs. if you wait until April.

Scenario A: Sign Feb 20th
Installation: Late April

Your system is turned on by May 1st. You catch 100% of the peak production season (May, June, July). You build a massive bank of credits. Your bill next winter is likely $0.

Scenario B: Sign April 20th
Installation: Late July

You miss May and June—the two most productive months of the year. You enter winter with a “half-full” bank. You will likely owe the utility money from January through March.

Bonus: Beat the June 1st Rate Hike

Historically, New Jersey utilities adjust their “Price to Compare” (BGS rates) on June 1st following the state auctions. In 2026, analysts are predicting another increase.

By locking in your solar PPA rate or your ownership ROI before May, you insulate yourself from the summer rate surge before it even hits your bill.
